BERLIN (Reuters) - U.S. President George W. Bush told a German newspaper his best moment in more than five years in office was catching a big perch in his own lake.
"You know, I've experienced many great moments and it's hard to name the best," Bush told weekly Bild am Sonntag when asked about his high point since becoming president in January 2001.
"I would say the best moment of all was when I caught a 7.5 pound (3.402 kilos) perch in my lake," he told the newspaper in an interview published on Sunday.
This pretty much sums up our president. So his best moment was one of the many, many vacation days he allots himself, fishing in his presumably stocked lake (very sportsmanlike, no?). OK. So if a professor asked me this about my time as a grad student, I would realize that he/she was expecting an answer related to my job/studies. Bush? Not so much.
Or maybe Bush was being a realist for once: I would actually agree that this is probably Bush at the pinnacle of his abilities as president. Let's evaluate this moment. Not causing destruction to human life? Check. Not misleading the American people into preemptive war on bad intelligence? Check. Taking a break from paying off big business with taxpayer dollars? Check. Refraining from destroying eco-systems? Check. Not weakening environmental protection measures? Check. All in all, I agree, this probably is his best moment.

Great pieces Becky! The scary thing is that when asked what his worst moment was, he said 9/11... which lends support to the claim that the fish really WAS the best thing about his reign thus far. I'm sure you saw it, but just to be sure, did you catch the video of Stephen Colbert at the White House dinner? SO gutsy, and mere feet away from Bush. That man is my hero.

Now I'm not the biggest Bush fan but the man is politically brilliant. I love how he distracts liberals with these bizarre comments. Everyone thinks the man is stupid but that's exactly the image he wants to project.
Of course he wasn't going to choose a moment that had to do with his job. That would create far too much controversy. On the other hand, making a comment about a fish just makes liberals chatter. Ha! Beck, you fell right into his trap.
Lindsey: I did indeed!! I was surprised when I saw a clip that showed how close Bush was to Colbert -- incredible guts.
Karuna: Is he really acting at this point? If the man's so smart, why is he surrounding himself with the inept and the morally bankrupt?
And if he is acting with comments like this, then I'm equally worried. I think it also has to do with the fact that he hasn't done anything that really brought Americans together recently. Maybe you could argue that initially the war efforts were uniting, before all the botches... I think it's a bad sign when a president can't give a real answer to that question for fear of a "divisive" answer.
Oh becky becky! Bush has surrounded himself with some of the most brilliant minds in the world. You may think they have no morals (and I agree with you that many do not), but they are brilliant.
When I was abroad, Bush was often compared to Reagan by many of my professors. The guy who loves to be thought of as dumb, because in the end everyone underestimates him.
Again, I'm not a huge bush fan. I support his foreign policy completely, but I am ashamed that he has not vetoed a single pork layered domestic spending bill. I don't like that he hasn't put his foot down completely on immigration. And, I don't like that he signed that over-the-top RX drug plan. Frankly, I'm a conservative and in a lot ways, Bush is not!
That being said, he knows how to play the political field. He doesn't care that liberals get all anxious about his comments. And really, does his moment as president matter that much? :)
